Overview
Notre
Dame and Indiana University
South Bend have a joint arrangement
to provide a Masters of Science
in Education with a concentration
in Community Leadership for
qualified Notre Dame employees
on Notre Dame’s
campus.
This
36 hour credit program is a two-year
masters degree program that does
not confer a teaching license. The
program is designed to graduate
a “cohort” every
two academic years. A
minimum of twelve students is
needed to start a new cohort.
Generally,
students will start in the fall
as a member of a specific cohort
that studies a prescribed curriculum
(See curriculum in FAQ section)
and graduate two years later at
the end of the second summer session. Specifically,
students take two courses in the
fall semester, two in the spring,
and one in each of the two summer
terms for each of the two years
in order to earn 36 credit hours.
Classes
are led by IUSB instructors
in Notre Dame’s
facilities and meet once a week
for two and a half hours scheduled
to meet in the evenings after
regular work hours. Students
are expected to enroll in the
required classes each semester
in order to complete the program
in the two year period.
Students
are responsible for the cost
of
tuition, books and fees at the
IUSB rates. As of Fall 2008,
tuition
is $212.30 per credit hour for
in-state students; it is likely
to increase by Fall 2009. Out-of-state
residents are subject to the out-of-state
tuition rate which is currently
$522.55 per credit (as of 12/4/08). Students
may take advantage of Notre Dames’ Educational
Reimbursement program which reimburses
up to $1,500 per benefit year
(July through June) for tuition
and fees; books are not reimbursable.

Frequently
Asked Questions - FAQs
Is
a certain GPA (grade point average)
required?
Yes,
in order to continue in the program
you must maintain a cumulative
GPA of 3.0 or higher. If you
receive
a “C” in
a class, your cumulative GPA must
still be maintained at a 3.0 or
higher. The program does not accept
any grades below a “C” so
you will need to retake the class
if you earn below a “C.”
Is
there an attendance requirement?
No,
however, each class covers a
significant
amount of information and missing
even one class compromises the
ability for successful course
requirements completion.
What
if I find out that I can’t
handle two classes a week? Do
I have to pay for the class if
I have to drop it?
Yes,
if you drop it after the defined “grace
period.”
I
live in Michigan. Do
I have to pay “out
of state” tuition?
Probably. In
general, “a
person shall be classified as
a “resident
student” if
he or she has continuously resided
in Indiana for at least 12 consecutive
months immediately preceding the
first scheduled day of classes
of the semester or other session
in which the individual registers
in the university.” However,
you should read the residency
requirements and consult with
the advisor to fully understand
how the rules apply to your situation. http://www.iusb.edu/~regr/resident.shtml
